What Does an IPX6 Rating Mean?

Thanks to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and their “IP” rating system, consumers are now provided with more honest and accurate information when it the intrusion of water and dust into mechanical casings and electrical enclosures. The days of vague “waterproof” claims have been replaced by true ratings obtained through stringent tests that confirm a product’s durability. This development falls right in line with the newer generation of marine and powersports electronics that are rapidly gaining popularity. The IP ratings are extremely helpful to consumers purchasing electronics that will be exposed to the elements, such as amplifiers and Bluetooth receivers intended for boats, jet skis, side-by-sides or motorcycles.

Our MBT-RX Bluetooth Receiver as well as our MX Amplifiers have been given an IPX6 rating and are capable of being exposed to the elements with no risk of failing. Products with an IPX6 rating can get wet, whether it’s a light spray, a high-pressure nozzle or exposure to the rain. Our IPX6 rated products are also dust tight, which makes them perfect for side-by-sides, ATV’s, motorcycles and other powersports vehicles.

In order for a product to receive an IPX6 rating, one of the many tests that the product must endure is a minimum of three minutes of powerful jets spraying at least 100 liters of water per minute all over the outer casing of the product without the water ever penetrating. There are also various dust tests conducted to ensure the product is sealed and completely dust tight.

It is important to remember that an IPX6 rated product is not submergible in water. Completely submergible products with absolutely no entry points for water intrusion are awarded an IPX7 rating. This feat is not feasible with an amplifier that has all of the necessary power and signal wires coming out of the circuit board, as well as control potentiometers and switches.
